Week 19 Summary (August 22, 1938 - August 28, 1938)

Week Nineteen of the 1938 BBW Replay is in the books, and this was a week for the ages. A total of 75 games were played, including a total of 21 doubleheaders. A busy, busy week, but everyone knew it was coming. Teams skipped right past the 110-games-played mark; a few have passed the 120-games-played mark, and most will pass that mark relatively quickly in the upcoming week. The most significant schedule event was what the Athletics went through. They ended last week with a doubleheader, they had Monday off, and then they played doubleheaders every day for the remainder of the week. Seven doubleheaders in an eight-day span is a rough road for any team, especially a last-place club like Philadelphia. In 1938, the A's went 4-10 over this span; in the replay, they went 3-11.

In the AL, New York was able to continue its slow but inevitable road to the pennant. They ended the week having won nine of their last ten games and have opened an 11.0 games lead over second-place Boston. Boston has been playing well, but for naught, as nothing they do seems to be able to hold the Yankees back. Behind the Red Sox, Washington, Cleveland, and Detroit continue to tangle for third place, but all three are well behind Boston.

In the NL, Pittsburgh remains resolute at the top of the NL standings, but even they can hear the footsteps behind them as Chicago, Cincinnati, and New York refuse to go away. The Pirates have a 4.0- games lead with five weeks remaining. They keep getting good pitching and timely hitting, but they know that any hiccup along the way will open the door to the teams on their tail.

The other significant event of the week was that two more Cycles were hit, giving us seven for the season. More significantly, St. Louis Browns third baseman Harlond Clift hit for two Cycles within three days of each other. Here is the list of Cycles so far in the 1938 replay:

With Week 19 completed, that means we only have five weeks of the 1938 season remaining. We will move into September before the end of this upcoming week, with Sunday, October 2, the final day of the regular season. I am not anticipating any substantial change in the AL, but I somehow suspect that the NL will experience plenty of turmoil before we are all done. Maybe we will get an additional Cycle (or two!) before we are all done as well. Regardless, let's go play!
