The 1938 BBW Replay is in the books, and the powerful New York Yankees were able to overcome the pesky Pittsburgh Pirates by four games to one in the 1938 World Series. The Pirates were able to scrape up runs to make things interesting, but the Yankees could just explode when needed, and the Pirates were never able to keep up. The late 1930's resulted in another Yankees dynasty, and this team proved no different. Overall, this season was fun to play with plenty of offensive fireworks. Maybe not as much offense as the 1930 season, but certainly more than enough to go around. Detroit first baseman Hank Greenberg hit 59 homeruns and drove in 204 runs, but what was most fun was his ability to hit with runners on base - hence the record-breaking RBI total. Boston first baseman Jimmie Foxx finished with 55 homeruns and 180 RBI's, but most importantly, he ended the season with a phenomenal .419 batting average. After a long and exciting regular season, it is time for the 1938 World Series. The Yankees powered their way to the American League pennant and have spent the past few weeks resting players and getting their pitching rotation set up. The NL went down to the last game of the regular season, with Pittsburgh getting a win on Sunday in Cincinnati while Chicago was losing their season finale in St. Louis, giving Pittsburgh its first NL Pennant since 1927. The first World Series game was scheduled to start in an NL park, so it was a short ride from Cincinnati for the Pirates, while the Yankees had to train it in from Boston. Pittsburgh was the easternmost member of the western clubs, so it was a shorter train ride than one to Chicago or St. Louis. Both teams made it into town on Monday, and a short workout on Tuesday was scheduled for both teams. Week Twenty-Four of the 1938 BBW Replay is in the books, and the regular season is now complete. While the pennant winner in the AL has been known for several weeks now, the winner of the NL came down to the last game of the last day of the season. The New York Yankees will represent the AL in the World Series, and the Pittsburgh Pirates will represent the NL, with the first game to be played Tuesday in Pittsburgh’s Forbes Field. Pittsburgh started the week 1.5 games behind Chicago, but in a three-game series in Chicago, the Pirates came away with a three-game sweep, and it was Pittsburgh that had the 1.5-game lead with only three days remaining. So, of course, the Pirates faltered, the Cubs bounced back, and as the season moved into the final games of the season on Sunday with the two teams tied for first.
