Week 24 Summary (September 26, 1938 - October 2, 1938)
Pittsburgh started the week 1.5 games behind Chicago, but in a three-game series in Chicago, the Pirates came away with a three-game sweep, and it was Pittsburgh that had the 1.5-game lead with only three days remaining. So, of course, the Pirates faltered, the Cubs bounced back, and as the season moved into the final games of the season on Sunday with the two teams tied for first.
While
all the eyes of baseball were upon these final games, Pittsburgh defeated Cincinnati
and waited nervously for the Chicago game in St. Louis to be completed. The
telegraph operator provided reports every half inning to the Pittsburgh
dressing room, and even though St. Louis had the lead for its entire game, the
room remained deathly quiet as everyone was afraid to speak up and jinx their
hopes. Finally, the game ended, the Cubs had lost, and the Pirates locker room
exploded in a cacophony of cheers, whoops, and hollers. Two cases of beer
mysteriously appeared, and the celebration soon moved from the locker room to
the train ride back to Pittsburgh to await the beginning of the 1938 World
Series.
Note:
There will be follow-up blog posts to include a team-by-team year-end review,
as well as a detailed final stats post. And, of course, we have a World Series
left to play, so we aren’t done quite yet. As always, let's go play!
