Week 10 Summary (June 20, 1938 - June 26, 1938)

Week Ten of the 1938 BBW Replay is in the books, and the warm weather of summer has apparently loosened the batters up as the offenses are starting to routinely pound pitchers in both leagues. A few teams have reached the 60-games-played mark already, all have passed the 50-games-played-point, and these teams will be reaching, or at least will be edging close to, 60 games-played by the end of this coming week.

In the AL, New York has now opened an 8.0-game lead, while Boston and Detroit appear to be destined to squabble over second and third place. The real story of the AL is Washington. They have climbed into fourth place by a secure margin, mostly because their offense has been on fire. They recently had their second 30-hit game of the season, and in both of these games, second baseman Buddy Myer completed hitting for the Cycle. I have had players hit for the Cycle previously, but never two by the same player. Babe Herman did it for the 1931 Brooklyn Dodgers, and two others have done it more recently, so this is not a common occurrence.

Philadelphia (AL) first baseman Lou Finney also hit for the Cycle this past week, the fourth of the season. The A's got off to a horrible start, but after several roster and lineup changes, they have become a team that teams will have to fight to get a win from.

Still in the AL, despite all the offense, the biggest story of the week was a No-Hitter by Lefty Gomez. Gomes walked one batter, and he was immediately erased in a double play, so Gomez only faced 27 batters in his masterpiece:

In the NL, Pittsburgh and Chicago continue to wrestle for first place. Below them, New York continues to be up and down, and while they try to straighten themselves out, it is Cincinnati that now sits in third place. The Reds may only be ahead of New York by the smallest of percentage points, but after having spent much of the early season wallowing in the muck at the bottom of the standings, they are happy to be where they are.

At the other end of the NL, the Phillies are sitting on a twelve-game losing streak. Philadelphia just completed a four-game home series against Cincinnati, and in every game, it was the Reds who had to mount a late-inning comeback to come away with the win. At least the Phillies aren’t getting smashed, but that makes the hard-fought losses just that much more deflating.

The Month of June is almost over, and next week will end with games being played in July. Just as time marches on, so does the replay, so let's go play!
