Week 2 Summary (April 25, 1938 - May 1, 1938)

Week Two of the 1938 BBW replay is in the books, and another exciting week it was. As expected, some teams are off to a hot start, some not so much, but it is early.  Of course, the season is only two weeks old, but so far it has been a confusing mix of offense outbursts and pitching excellence. We have had plenty of blowouts and big innings, but we have also had plenty of strong pitching performances as well. That is what makes a season like this so fun to play - ya' never know what you're gonna get.

In the AL, the surprise of the replay so far is the start of the St. Louis Browns, in first place with a 9-4 record. Led by Beau Bell (.262, 6 HR, 13 RBI's) and first baseman George McQuinn (.568, 11 RBI's), St. Louis leads the AL in homeruns (15) and is second in runs scored (76), trailing only the Yankees (91). The Browns pitching may leave much to be desired, but Bobo Newsom (3-0, 0.94) is off to a great start and the rest of the rotation is off to a good start as well.

Right after St. Louis, Boston, Washington, and Detroit may be in the upper half of the standings, but all have so far been unable to string together consistent levels of offense or pitching. It is early, and that will sort itself out, but the real threat from below is New York, currently in fifth place. Joe DiMaggio just returned to the lineup, following his early-season salary holdout. The rest of the AL knows that the Yankees' early-season pitching struggles will soon be fixed, and with DiMaggio added back to their already potent offense, it is only a matter of time until the New Yorkers make a serious charge up the standings.

In the NL, the Giants are off to a red-hot start, more than living up to their pre-season prognostications of winning their third consecutive NL pennant. Mel Ott (.311, 8 HR's, 15 RBI's) has provided several timely hits, and New York's big two mound men, Carl Hubbell (2-0, 3.`8) and Hal Schumacher (3-0, 2.42) both appear to be in mid-season form already. Manager Bill Terry has been experimenting with the back of his rotation, but everything that Terry has touched so far has worked quite well.

Pittsburgh and Chicago line up behind New York in the NL, but while these two teams are off to good starts, neither has been able to keep up with the Giants. Both teams will get their chance to face the Giants in the upcoming weeks, so all they can do now if fight to stay close and wait for their opportunity. If there was a surprise in the NL, Cincinnati was picked by many to finish in the upper half of the standings, but they currently languish in last place. Pitching problems have held up the Reds so far, so if they can sort these problems out, they really should be able to move up the standings pretty quickly.

For what it's worth, Week One was played with APBA BBW 6.0, while Week Two was completed using APBA BBW 6.1. I am always leery about making a major upgrade in the middle of a season, but I have not experienced any issues. So far, so good, anyway.
