Week 6 Summary (May 23, 1938 - May 29, 1938)

Week Six of the 1938 BBW replay is in the books, and it was another exciting week. The number of games picked back up for one thing, but after the standings in both leagues had tightened up over the previous two weeks, it was just a matter of who was gonna get hot and who was not, and then let the chips fall where they may. We are almost to the end of May, and there is still one team that hasn't played thirty games yet - the Chicago White Sox. They are sitting on twenty-eight games played, but this will be remedied tomorrow, because tomorrow is Memorial Day, and everybody will be playing a holiday doubleheader, sixteen games in all.

In the AL, it was Detroit's turn to put on a rush, and they moved into first place by the end of the week. St. Louis and New York have the same number of losses as Detroit, but the third-place Yankees also have the same number of wins as the fourth-place Red Sox. Of all these teams, it is really Cleveland that is on the move as they have climbed out of the bottom half of the AL standings and now reside in fifth place, 4.0 games behind first-place Detroit.

Of all the AL teams, St. Louis is still the biggest surprise. They were in first place for a few weeks earlier in the season, but then they hit a rough patch and started to tumble down the standings, at least until they put on a bit of a surge recently to put an end to their tumbling. The Browns actually finished up well below .500 and deep in the standings, and they may very well end up there yet, but that is a long way to go.

In the NL, the three-team race between Pittsburgh, New York, and Chicago is still going strong. Thanks to a current seven-game winning streak, the Pirates were able to move past Chicago and into first place. Both New York and Chicago remain in Pittsburgh's rear-view mirror, and all three are expecting this race to come down to the end of the season.

St. Louis is off to a good start, and Brooklyn is hanging around .500 as well, but neither team is really expected to compete against the top three. Cincinnati still sits behind these two, as their ongoing pitching issues have buried them in the bottom half of the standings so far. The Reds would love to make a serious move up the standings, but they have put themselves in a tough spot so far.

As mentioned previously, there are sixteen games on the agenda for tomorrow, as it is the Memorial Day doubleheader extravaganza. These games are all previously scheduled games, though, so all of the games that were missed during Weeks Four and Five will still need to be made up. The other thing to note is that all teams made their mid-May roster cutdowns, so the rosters on every team are pretty thin. Thin rosters can get tested during doubleheaders, and when doubleheaders pile up on a team … well, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Let's go play!
