Week 24 Summary (September 26, 1938 - October 2, 1938)

Week Twenty-Four of the 1938 BBW Replay is in the books, and the regular season is now complete. While the pennant winner in the AL has been known for several weeks now, the winner of the NL came down to the last game of the last day of the season. The New York Yankees will represent the AL in the World Series, and the Pittsburgh Pirates will represent the NL, with the first game to be played Tuesday in Pittsburgh’s Forbes Field. Pittsburgh started the week 1.5 games behind Chicago, but in a three-game series in Chicago, the Pirates came away with a three-game sweep, and it was Pittsburgh that had the 1.5-game lead with only three days remaining. So, of course, the Pirates faltered, the Cubs bounced back, and as the season moved into the final games of the season on Sunday with the two teams tied for first. While all the eyes of baseball were upon these final games, Pittsburgh defeated Cincinnati and waited nervously for the Chicago game in St. Louis to be completed. The telegraph ...

Monday, September 26, 1938 Transactions:   New York (NL) infielder Bill Cissell made his Major League Finale on 09/25/1938   Washington outfielder Goose Goslin made his Major League Finale on 09/25/1938 Philadelphia (NL) pitcher Elmer Burkar t made his Season Debut on 09/27/1938. Burkart had previously been recalled from Montgomery (SEAL)   Boston (NL) pitcher Tom Earley made his Major League Debut on 09/27/1938. Earley had previously been recalled from Hartford (EL)   Brooklyn pitcher John Gaddy made his Major League Debut on 09/27/1938. Gaddy had previously been recalled from Elmira (EL)   Boston (AL) 6 New York (AL) (H) 2   Both teams scored a pair of runs in the fifth, but then homeruns by Ben Chapman (5) and Johnny Peacock (3) led to a four-run sixth for the Red Sox.
